New Year… New Way to Make a Resolution

Generally I don’t buy into resolutions. If I want to make some sort of change, I do it. And coincidentally that’s what research supports.

Setting a resolution solely because it's January 1st can lack the intrinsic motivation necessary for long-term commitment. But… if you have a goal that aligns with the start of the year, embrace it! Just remember and be warned… the date alone isn't enough to keep you on track.

To set yourself up for success in 2025, consider these research-backed strategies:

  • Clarify Your "Why": Understanding the deeper reason behind your goal can provide sustained motivation. For instance, if you aim to lift weights three days a week, your "why" might be to increase muscle mass for better health and vitality.

  • Anticipate Roadblocks: Life is unpredictable, and challenges are inevitable. Identify potential obstacles and devise strategies to overcome them. Traveling for a week? Research gyms or portable equipment options in advance. Hosting house guests? Communicate your workout schedule to ensure you maintain your routine.

  • Set Small, Measurable Goals: Break down your main objective into achievable steps. Perhaps aim to increase your weights every four weeks. Celebrate these micro-achievements; research indicates that recognizing small successes can significantly boost your commitment and morale.

  • Maintain Accountability: Keep track of your progress to stay motivated. This could involve partnering with a friend who shares similar goals or maintaining a dedicated journal to record your workouts. Regularly reviewing your progress can reinforce your commitment and highlight areas for improvement.

Embarking on new goals requires thoughtful planning and dedication. If you're setting objectives for 2025, I wish you the best of luck.
