Choosing Milk — Part 1

For the Health of Everyone Involved

The type of milk and dairy products you choose can significantly impact both your health and the well-being of the cows involved in production.

You likely already know that organic milk guarantees that cows are not exposed to hormones or antibiotics. Organic farming practices prioritize the well-being of the animals by mandating ample time for pasture grazing and providing environments conducive to relaxation and contentment. By choosing organic milk, you not only safeguard your health but also advocate for ethical treatment of dairy cows.

Organic is better for everyone and every cow. I say “yes” to organic!

The pinnacle of dairy consumption lies in organic, grass-fed milk—often referred to as grass milk. Cows raised under this regimen exclusively consume an organic, forage-based diet without the addition of grains or feed. This natural diet contributes to the overall health and happiness of the cows, thereby enhancing the quality of their milk. Compared to conventional and organic milk, grass-fed milk boasts the highest levels of beneficial omega-3 fatty acids while minimizing the presence of omega-6 fatty acids, which are associated with chronic diseases like cancer and diabetes. Despite being pricier due to the additional efforts and expenses involved in farming, organic grass-fed milk represents a commitment to safer, healthier dairy products for both consumers and cows alike. I firmly believe the value is worth it!

It’s true – organic grass fed is more expensive because more work and higher costs go into this type of farming. By opting for organic, grass-fed milk, consumers send a message to the dairy industry—advocating that products that prioritize safety, sustainability, and animal welfare. This shift in consumer behavior can incentivize more farmers to embrace organic, sustainable practices, and foster a healthier future for all.

These choices matter!
